Red Brass Pipe
 |
Properties
- Originally used chiefly for making cannons
and guns and is often reffered to as Gunmetal.
- Particulalry resistant to corrosion from steam
and salt water.
- Brass pipe on hot-water lines does not
color water red as steel pipe often does.
- Lead was traditionally added to plumbing brasses
to improve machinability and ensure pressure tightness. In the 1990s the EPA dramatically limited the amount of allowable lead in the drinking water delivery system
- A combination of bismuth and selenium proved
an effective substitute and the new Optimized red brasses can now be used by all foundries without restriction.
